The cycling network for everyday

Bavarian cycling network

The direct link between Bavaria’s towns and municipalities

Cycling networks consist of cycle connections that are used for everyday life or recreational purposes. The connections can be on cycle highways, cycle paths or protective lanes, or even on forest or farm tracks. In any case, a continuous and connecting network structure is a prerequisite for the bicycle to be used in everyday life and for recreational purposes.

In Bavaria, a state-wide everyday cycle network is to be made available in the next few years, connecting all Bavarian towns and municipalities as directly and consistently as possible (Bavarian cycle network).

The Free State of Bavaria is designing and realising this network. The network will be visible locally via directional signage. This superordinate everyday cycle network is to be further consolidated at municipal level. The Free State will support the districts, towns and municipalities in this endeavour.

In a first step towards realisation, the State Ministry of Housing, Building and Transport has developed a draft for the ‘Bavarian Cycling Network’ and coordinated it with the districts, independent cities and the state building authorities.

On the basis of this harmonised draft, the network will then be inspected, i.e. an on-site inspection will be carried out. The results of the inspection serve as the basis for analysing deficiencies in the individual routes and planning the directional signage.

The costs for the initial installation of directional signage and the adaptation of existing directional signage will be covered by the Free State of Bavaria.
