The Danube-Moldau cycle path leads from Jandelsbrunn, Breitenberg, Wegscheid and Untergriesbach to Obernzell in the Danube valley. It runs near the German/Austrian border in the so-called border triangle and is linked to the cycle paths in the Czech Republic and in the Mühlviertel. Between Jandelsbrunn and Untergriesbach it runs on forest paths and on roads with little traffic, medium and sometimes large
The Danube-Moldau Cycle Path (until 2019 Danube-Forest Cycle Path) begins in the Danube valley in Obernzell and follows the route of the former rack railway in the idyllic Griesenbachtal with a 6% incline to Untergriesbach. After Untergriesbach it goes to the Rannasee and to Wegscheid, then via Breitenberg past the bathing pond in Gegenbach and on to Jandelsbrunn. The cycle path runs on forest paths and roads with little traffic, some of which have steep climbs and descents, and always offers distant views of the beautiful hilly landscape of the Bavarian Forest, and when the weather is clear even as far as the Alps. In Jandelsbrunn, a short detour to the well-kept, small bathing lake is worthwhile, where you can relax after the exertion.
From Jandelsbrunn, the Danube-Moldau cycle path runs along the same route of a former railway line (water-bound surface) as the Adalbert-Stifter cycle path via Neureichenau, far away from any traffic noise. At Frauenberg you pass the European watershed, where the Danube drains south into the Black Sea, and the Elbe into the North Sea. Between Frauenberg and Haidmühle, tired legs can be refreshed in the cold water of the Mirasatbach stream in the beautifully landscaped Jogl Kneipp facility (50 m from the cycle path; signposted).
Refreshed, you then cycle along the nearby Mirasatbach until it flows into the Kalte Moldau – one of the two source streams of the Moldau – just before the end of the railway line in Haidmühle. Now it’s not far to the end of the Danube-Moldau cycle path at the Haidmühle – Nové Údolí border crossing.
The Danube-Moldau cycle path is also linked to the connecting cycle paths in the Šumava National Park (South Bohemia/Czech Republic) and the Austrian Mühlviertel, as well as to the Danube cycle path. Furthermore via the Adalbert-Stifter-Radweg to the Donau-Ilz-Radweg. This area can be explored in many different ways thanks to many other cycle (circular) paths, such as the Danube Pearl Cycle Path or the Granite Cycle Path.
The Danube-Moldau cycle path between Obernzell and Jandelsbrunn is predestined for e-bikers or sporty cyclists in good physical condition. Between Jandelsbrunn and Haidmühle, it is also very suitable for families due to the gentle incline.
There are other bathing and refreshment opportunities very close to the cycle path in the Obernzell outdoor pool, the natural outdoor pool in Neureichenau and in the Kreuzbachsee in Haidmühle.
higher gradients. From Untergriesbach it follows the route of the former rack railway with a gradient of 6% to Obernzell. The cycle path is a real challenge for sporty and active cyclists. It connects the Danube valley with a varied low mountain range landscape that Adalbert Stifter was already enthusiastic about 150 years ago.
